Was the Colored men. I don't mean their characters but the actors (Khalil Kain and Micheal (forever to be known as pretty ricki) Ealy) Did their damn thing. While I think the movie overall was a bust and won't win any accolades, there are some very poignant moments and some actors that truly astonished me with their performances.
I love love love Micheal Ealy. I can't help but to stare at him in awe but in this movie, he transcended his good looks and became a monster and in watching him I saw not a trace of that gorgeous man I have come to picture stalk.
Khalil Kain. Man where have you been since Girlfriends. His part was insane but predictable. I swear prior to a certain event occured in the movie, I called the outcome and yes I was right.
Thandie Newton. Wow. Because she really hasn't been in any serious features for a while, and those she had been in her parts are seemingly minor, one forgets or is unable to see what an acting powerhouse she is. I have to give it up to Ms. Newton. I didn't expect her to own that role in the manner that she did. Oscar material indeed.
Kimberly Elise is magnificent. I have always loved her as an actress and she continued to prove her skills here.
The Veterans: Loretta Divine, Phylicia Rashad and Whoopi were Great.
I have to give it to Tyler Perry. The casting was on POINT. I was not so in love with kerry Washington, Anika Noni Rose or Hill Harper but I'm not certain if it was the disjointed-ness of the material they recieved or if it was thier inability to really make magic.
Overall, Tyler Perry gets and F from me. I loved the book, haven't been able to see the play but the movie adaptation was horrible. The plot was slow, the doalogue was awkward, the action was predictable. Sure there were some GREAT moments but I was left feeling robbed of a true ending. I think the translation was literal and the movie adaptation failed to deliver the message the book was trying to deliver. The movie just seemed like a more mature way of male bashing when indeed this should not have been the case. Tyler Perry has the resources to do better, to be better but he is fine with maintaining the status quo. His films are awful. All of the films he's done after his original plays have seemed rush, lacked real character development, cohesion and always left a cliffhanger. Knowing this, I should have been prepared for what I got. I wasn't which seems to be the source of my discontent. I guess expecting Speilberg material from Perry is like expecting a Meryl Streep-esque performance from Beyonce. Aint gonna happen without help. This Movie did and will continue to do well not because it's a great movie but because of the cast. He will continue to gain wealth simply because he is THE only person in Hollywood who is making films where black people can see themselves (color not character) I hope that the numbers speak for themselves, that they show Hollywood that we will come out to support great movies, great stories. Movies like Soul Plane and The ticket bombed, not because us people of color don't have the discretionary income to see movies but because we already knew it was going to be stupid. Just like white people didn't go see Lady killers in droves. We reserve our right to spend money on quality. We can and do when the opportunity presents itself.
